Jeff Bagwell will get his day in Cooperstown next month. The former Astros first baseman had a magnificent career that demonstrated his abilities as an exceptional hitter, fielder, and baserunner.
Bagwell spent his entire career in the National League, and therefore only had one opportunity to face Mike Mussina. It came on June 10th, 2003 when the Astros visited Yankee Stadium.
Bagwell went one for three against Mussina, with one strikeout. Bagwell’s hit was a double. The Yankees won the game 5-3 and Mussina earned the win after seven innings of two-run ball. This is the same game we wrote about in our Biggio/Mussina piece from 2015. It is the only time Mussina faced the Astros dynamic duo.
The 2003 Astros were a loaded team. In addition to Bagwell and Biggio, their lineup included Richard Hidalgo (.957 OPS), Morgan Ensberg (.907 OPS), Jeff Kent (.860 OPS), and future Yankee Lance Berkman (.927 OPS). The Astros lead the NL Central for most of the second half but lost seven of their last nine games to finish a game behind the Chicago Cubs.
We congratulate Jeff Bagwell on joining Craig Biggio in the Baseball Hall of Fame.
